Venue Hunting - Day 1
Yesterday I got a chance to head to Winter Park with Ender my 11 month old son. While down there I took a peek into the Winter Park Farmer’s Market Building, which was recommended as a venue choice to consider.
From the outside the Farmers market looks more like a warehouse then anything else, but when you venture over to the main entrance things get much classier. The interior of the building is very rustic with it’s red brick walls (it used to be the old train station). Since then they’ve fixed it up nicely and it seems to get used quite often for receptions and parties. The venue can hold 180 people in it’s one big room and provides tables and chairs but all linens and catering have to be brought in on your own. The location is pretty nice, being just across the railroad track from park avenue, with many restaurants, shops, and bars.
Sunday through Thursday the price to rent is $100 / hour (minimum 3 hours). Friday, Saturday $750 / hour. Saturday during the day the farmers market is here.
Although this place is really quaint I think I’d much rather find a venue with 2 rooms, rather then one big one. Here’s why… If we have 75 people attend and 8 hour barcamp, and we allow people to do 30 minute talks, there would only be enough time for 16 sessons! Even if we split things into 20 minute segments, it would still only be 24 sessions. We could do lightning talks, but well, I’d rather give people more choice about what they want to listen to, with two different rooms.
So.. If you’re ever looking for nice place for a wedding reception, definitely check it out.
Any comments, or additional venue ideas?
Tomorrow I’ll be heading over to Taste, to meet up with the owner and see what that location can offer.

sounds cool, but I would hate to see that much of the budget get eaten up just in venue fees

I'm with Phil. The one room thing would probably be alright, but I bet we can find something way cheaper/possibly free.
