BarCampOrlando in the Orlando Sentinel
For any of you that didn't catch the news on the mailing list, the Sentinel just put out a great story on us. Hopefully this medium will reach some people that wouldn't have normally come, and make the event an even bigger deal!

Are you guys sure you're happy with that article? There were several glaring mistakes, and it appeared to just reinforce every negative stereotype that surrounds programmers. Not cool. I especially resent the word, "lurk". That sucks. A lot. This isn't Dateline. Child predators lurk. Programmers do not. Anyway, it wasn't all bad. Not only was Gregg able to go back in time and become 10 years younger, he seems to have also changed professions overnight. That's fantastic. I think we'd all be really interested in hearing your secret. I do feel bad for the sponsors though. Or anybody looking to meet potential clients at the event (read: everybody). According to the article there's going to be "zero tolerance for self-promotion". I'm not sure how that's going to play out at a networking event, but I guess we'll see how it goes. Does anybody else feel this article missed the mark?

I agree. Incidentally, you can talk about the article using a site that my partners and I have developed. It's called SlamSpace.com, and though, like the article says, I work for Fortune 500 companies by day, and work on sites I'm really passionate about by night, I will do my best to not talk about myself or the site in any way that could be misconstrued as promotional. On the upside, the article did make me aware the event was taking place. Hopefully others were clued in as well. Congrats to the organizers. And thanks. I'm sure it'll be fun.

I'm a sponsor. I'm happy with the article. Two specifics reasons. First, it highlights Orlando (and Florida) as a great technical community. That's a message that needs be be broadcast larger. Firms like wikipedia are shipping jobs to California cause there's a _perception_ there's no skills here. Articles like that point out there are hot technical communities here capable of having big crowds. Barcamps, codecamps, any event in Orlando is drawing a crowd. Second reason I like the article is the axiom - any press is good press. Make people talk and think. I won't be promoing my firm (fortune500) but I will be showing some cool tech I'm excited about. The article probably also pulled in a number of folks who wouldn't have known about he event otherwise. Its all goodness.
