BarCampOrlando 3 - Full of Win

By all accounts, BarCampOrlando was a giant success. We had 565 registered campers, and from the initial counts, we probably had about 300+ folks come by to check out the sessions. The feedback on twitter was supremely positive, and the sessions this year were some of the best we’ve ever had.

Thank you Orlando for filling this year’s BarCamp with so much win. Regardless of the hardwork and sleepless nights that the organizers put into the event, BarCamp happens out there with you guys. With out the participants, BarCampOrlando would have just been 4 empty rooms. It takes passionate folks like yourself to fill them up with your “A” Game topics and desire to push yourselves, and our community forward. We’re constantly amazed and inspired by our community. If we keep working together like this, there is nothing we won’t be able to accomplish.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful sponsors! As your help guaranteed our campers a delicious lunch, better internet access than we’ve ever had at BarCampOrlando, and the t-shirt souvenir. Special Thanks to Adam Steadman of Saintly Designs for working so hard at the last minute to get the BarCamp shirts printed and for coming on site and printing custom shirts for us.

The talks may end at 6pm, but the fun does not end there. We have put together a stellar line-up of artists bringing a mind bending mix of technology and music to keep the conversation going until 10pm. Once the whiteboards go down and the chairs cleared away, four of central florida’s most innovative electronic sound shapers will take to the stage at slingapour’s and create a cerebral experience of beats, bleeps, and gadgetry for both sides of your brain.

Meet your hosts:

alGARhythm One of Central Florida’s best kept secrets. Tucked away in his secret labratory somewhere in the wetlands of Volusia county, this digital shamen will bring the ruckus as he performs his special brand of electronic rock and roll for your eyes and ears. Multiple drum machines, circuit bent toys, and an array of samplers are his weapons. Your brain stem, his target.

Pan/Dos The end of tv as we know it. Pan/Dos combines the analogue hardware of yore into a chaotic, yet melodic soup of sight and sound, using VHS and TV Tubes as the ingredients. Must be seen to be believed.

dr.xnlb This is what happens when a certified code ninja slices his way into the music scene. By touching his mac in its naughty places, he can tease beats into a digital tapestry of circular logic and musical run on sentences with more segues than Dean Kamen. Also, pancakes.

dj[hexWarrior] This host of WPRK’s Talk Nerdy To Me and founder of the Nerdapalooza music festival will start the night off right with his own mix of Nerdcore, Chiptunes, Wizard Rock, and other genres so geeky, they make Woz himself blush.

If you’ve signed up for BarCamp Orlando 2009 prior to Mar 18, 2009, you probably got this (or something similar) in your inbox. In the interests of fairness and flame wars, I’m posting it here, too. Maybe the Googles will like me for it. :D —David

Hi. You’re getting spammed because you signed up for BarCamp Orlando 2009.

Yes, I said spammed. Unsolicited email contact. From an organizer. It’s shameful. You never agreed to any of this. It’s a sham. And you’re about to raise a ballyhoo about it.

Well, go on. Raise your ballyhoo, already, whatever that is (I think it’s related to a fracas, though).

Now that we’ve gotten past all that superficial rage and disgust, let’s get to the real issue at hand: You want to come to BarCamp, a free-but-awesome mini-conference complete with tasty lunches and printed t-shirts and figurative tons of swag for everyone. One the flip side of the coin, we – the humble organizers of this thing – want to give you that thing you are so craving. However, there is one sad truth we must account for: these things cost money.

Yes, that’s right. I’m hitting you up for the cash. Read no further you stingy worry-warts, you scrooges and misers of the world. The rest of this post does not apply to you. I’m talking to everyone else out there, because we’re looking for more sponsors and donors and generous people to make this thing happen. We’ve already had a great first round of sponsors sign up (check out the Sponsors Page, if you don’t believe me), and we’re gonna need an even better round two.

Shamelessly, therefore, I implore you to promote the crap out of this thing.

Wait, did he say “promote”...? He did! He did say “promote”...!

That’s right, put up your wallets and waggle those tongues. Well, not to say that some of you might be coerced into becoming donors. There’s no limit on donations, of course, so you could give whatever your heart desired. And in kind thanks, we’d happily place your name on the list of all the other donors, in no particular order (no one else liked the “donor-cloud by amount” idea but me). But enough about that…

You people work places, don’t you? Of course you do! Some of you even work for yourselves, which is even more of a reason to sign up as a sponsor…! Where else could you sit shoulder-to-shoulder with Atlantic.net, Voxeo, NFi Studios, and all the rest of our sponsors?

Aside: BTW, Ted Murphy, if you’re watching your Google Alerts, where’s Izea already…?

I’m certainly not buying any billboards on I-4 any time soon. At $100, this is probably the best exposure your company can afford all year. Give a presentation, too, and plaster your company logo on the slides, and you’re in like Flynn (the lucky stiff). Now, I’m not promising anything special, and you’re not likely to get slashdotted from this event, but you’ll definitely get some more Google Juice (tm) from the (fully tax-deductible) experience.

This is the level of promotion I’m talking about. Go to your bosses, your managers, your marketing people. Tell them what an opportunity it would be to get your agency or studio or company logo stuck in the faces of 500 or so super-smart people. And if that’s too much, toss them this handy PDF sponsorship form and pray really, really hard. Oh, and donate something. Really, if you wanna. It’ll be good for you. I promise.
